東京-フロストバレーYMCAパートナーシップは1979年にスタートし、異文化生活によるストレス軽減のため日本語によるプログラムを始めました。開設当時はほとんどの参加者が海外駐在員家族でしたが、現在では海外駐在員家族はもちろん、日米両国籍を持つ子ども、日本にルーツのあるアメリカ人などバックグラウンドは様々です。日本で暮らした経験のない子ども、日本語が苦手な子どもの参加が増加傾向にあります。生活はアメリカに適応していても、子どもたちにとって日本人として、日系アメリカ人としてのアイデンティティーを築きながら自分らしく生きていくことは生易しいことではありません。フロストバレーの豊かな自然環境の中で多くの仲間と出会い、楽しみ、自己を確立し、国際人としての足場を築いていく、そんな貴重な機会を提供していきます。
人は、人に出会って「人」になる
サマーキャンプでは高校生、大学生を中心とするキャンプカウンセラー（リーダー）が生活を共にします。アクティビティーを楽しむだけではなく、起きてから寝るまで、集団の中で仲間と共に生活を創っていく時間を大切にします。信頼できる仲間たちに出会い、小さな社会を築く中、一人ひとりが新たな自分と出会えるきっかけがあります。大人が用意する日常の暮らしにはない、自分たちが創り上げた生活を共にする、かけがえのない時間となります。
The Tokyo-Frost Valley YMCA Partnership began in 1979 when an agreement was signed between the Tokyo YMCA and the National YMCA to address the growing number of Japanese expatriates to the United States. It offered programs in Japanese to help alleviate stress for those living in a culture different from their own. In 1982, the Tokyo Partnership’s Summer Camp program moved to Frost Valley YMCA, and in 1991, a formal partnership with Frost Valley YMCA was established. Initially, most participants were from expatriate families, but today, they come from various backgrounds. There has been an increase in participants who have never lived in Japan or those who are not fluent in Japanese. Those children may be well-adjusted to life in the US, but developing their identities as Japanese or Japanese Americans can be challenging. Surrounded by Frost Valley’s rich natural environment, participants have valuable opportunities to meet people with similar backgrounds, have fun, and build a strong sense of self and community as they grow into global citizens.
The Summer Camp, conducted in Japanese, focuses on forming relationships and creating a shared community through fun activities. The majority of staff are high school and college students with Japanese backgrounds. We also have several staff members who come directly from Japan for the summer to share their camp skills and language expertise. Participants can discover new aspects of themselves while making trusted friends and building a small society, making the summer an irreplaceable experience.
